One or both of our sweet innocent little (bastard) kitties had decided that she really liked the carpet in our new bedroom - as a pisser unfortunately. A little investigation shows why - evidentially there have been other kitties in that carpet’s past that have had similar inclinations. In any case, we aren’t big wall to wall carpet fans anyway. We were pretty certain that the same nice oak floors that are in the rest of the house would also be under foot in the bedroom so we set out to tear the old crap out.
Unfortunately, we got the idea to do this at 9:30 on Friday night - so we weren’t actually done to the point where the bed could go back into the room until well after 1am. All in all it was successful. The floors in the bedroom now are only slightly worse looking that those in the rest of the house, but that’s still pretty good. Besides, It’ll probably serve as the motivation we need to rent a sander this coming summer and refinish the floors in the whole place. I kind of dig the rough, worn look of the floors right now, but I know that the old oak will be absolutely beautiful when sanded and finished properly.

We’ve moved in! Covad won’t be out to complete the DSL line (which will suck anyway - 16,000 ft from teh C.O.) so I’ve been pretty much offline since Saturday. I’ve been keeping myself pretty well preoccupied with real world projects such as unpacking, building work benches for the garage, cleaning, etc. We’re making a list of projects that we’d like to accomplish though over the next year or so at the place - and I’ll be writing about all our experiences as new home owners.
Pics of Moving in, boxes, Dylan being a stoked little dog in the yard.
You should all come visit us sometime!
Just e-mail me for directions.

Lesson of the day: Spend $300,000, sign nearly 2 inches of paperwork -get a free $2 pen!
Yes, we did it. The paper work is signed, dated, notarized, packaged and shipped. Believe it or not - I’m about to own a freaking house.
We’ll probably get the keys on Tuesday! Anyone know a good electrician in the city?
Current mood (a la LJ): Broke…. but happy.

buddy of mine makes a very good point about the recent passing of the Washington State indoor smoking ban, and the political system in general.

Let me say that I supported the smoking ban, and voted for it - though reluctantly. As a one time smoker, friend of smokers, and fan of many a dive bar, I have some mixed feelings about the ban. The bottom line for me personally is, I very much dislike cigarette smoke around me. As much as I agree that smokers should have the right to smoke where they please, I feel more strongly that I should be able to go places I like without coming home smelling an ashtray. Maybe I’m just being selfish, but you know - I only get one vote so I’m going to use it how I want.

Finally! the docs arrived on the closing agent’s desk at about 4:30pm Friday. She has graciously offered to come into the office tomorrow (Saturday) morning to meet with us and sign the paperwork. I just realized, but this means I might actually.. you know.. OWN A HOUSE next week.
… wow
Anyway, nobody involved has been particularly impressed with the lenders we are going through. Our mortgage company and title company (I’ll release the names after the deal closes) have been awesome though. The lenders offered us a great rate for the time a couple of weeks ago, and it’s been difficult to force them into honoring it now that interest rates have climbed as much as they have. Looks like we got it all together though, the docs are prepared and waiting for some ink.

Our closing agent has generously offered to stay late tonight for us to sign assuming our lenders can figure out how to properly spell our name today. We may be running over there at the last possible minute - how fun.

Just when one starts to feel as though the whole process is not as bad as everyone says, and is actually pretty fun - you loose your control. The magic that goes on between the mortgage company, the underwriters, the lenders, the insurance company, and the closing agents is a pain! Let’s face it, any time 20+ people have to review and approve a series of complex legal and financial documents, things are bound to slow down.. yesterday, we hit that point.
Due to an unfortunate delay that I caused (though unknowingly) by switching our home owner’s insurance company at the last minute, the whole underwriting processes was delayed by a few days. This lead to other little complications here and there which all add up to.. nothing really, but it’s frustrating to have come this far through the process, and just be waiting.
It’s ok though, the deal is on track, we may be signing as early as Friday - and closing is on track for the 15th (Tuesday). Our hopeful plans to begin moving over the coming weekend are shot, but hey - we may just get some snowboarding in now
